Limping Robots for Security

Preventing falls in a malfunctioning bipedal humanoid is one of the biggest challenges in the field of robot safety. Figure.AI, a San Jose-based manufacturer of humanoid robots, is introducing “Vulcan”—its new AI-based robot control system that enables the humanoid to remain stable and prevent falls even if up to three actuators in the lower body fail.

In this video, Figure.AI CEO Brett Adcock demonstrates what happens to the robot when its knee drive fails. We see the humanoid robot performing its tasks, then noticing the knee failure, stopping its work, and limping to the maintenance station without falling over.
