Both types are necessary, just as we need visionaries and dreamers as well as down-to-earth people and realists.

But whenever I heard these terms and tried to categorize myself, I encountered contradictions. When I looked at my own daily routine and state of mind, I saw that, on the one hand, I was completely content with myself for long periods of time when I was working on books, reading, or lost in my thoughts, and I was very happy without people around me. These are clear signs of introversion.

On the other hand, I am on stages all the time and give talks, have lots of conversations where, much to the chagrin of others, I often talk a lot, socialize and meet people, and could easily be categorized as an extrovert. But even though I am very energetic and lively and enjoy it, I am completely exhausted afterwards. I need my peace and quiet.

I therefore always saw myself as something in between, as both, but that always sounded strange, and I had to explain what I was describing. And apparently, I’m not the only one who felt this way and stood between two worlds, because I came across a recently coined term that describes exactly the missing link between introversion and extroversion: otroversion.

According to Wikipedia, the American psychiatrist Rami Kaminski coined this term to describe another personality type: people who feel that they do not belong and are “different.” He called them “otroverts,” from the Spanish word “otro” (English: “other”).

He describes this type in his book The Gift Of Not Belonging. There is a kind of gray area between the two camps, between people who enjoy solitude and those who value sociability. Kaminsiki coined the term “otrovert” after recognizing this personality type in himself, some of his patients, and historical figures such as Frida Kahlo, Franz Kafka, Albert Einstein, and Virginia Woolf, who, in his opinion, were “known for not belonging to any group.”

Although introverts can interact with large groups, they do not necessarily feel that they have found their group. Extroverts are very friendly and able to form very deep relationships with other people. The only social difference is that they lack a connection to groups: collective identity or shared traditions. According to Kaminski, such people prefer to swim against the tide and do not tend to think like the vast majority of society.

An introvert would prefer to chat with one person in a quiet corner rather than buzzing from guest to guest like a sociable person. Because extroverts don’t really care who they impress or fear rejection, as they have nothing to lose, it can lead you to become a free thinker who is more independent and imaginative than an introvert or extrovert. These people often flourish creatively.

And somehow that’s exactly how it is. I don’t like belonging to a group, whether it’s a club, an association, or when traveling. I need a good balance of peace and quiet and company. I do like going to parties and events, but they’re a nightmare for me if I don’t know anyone there. I don’t have many real, close friends, but I do have a lot of acquaintances.

Anyway, at least now there’s a term that I can relate to better than the two that have been so widely used up to now. What kind of type are you?

The debates about introverts and extroverts, their superficiality or depth, social skills and social helplessness, and who would bring more value to humanity, are well known.
