I couldn’t listen to my own voice. In fact, your own voice always sounds different to you than it does to the listener. It took some time before I was able to listen to myself.

Voices are our calling card. We associate it with people’s character traits, whether we trust them, whether they annoy us or whether we notice them at all. Women, for example, are assigned less competence depending on their voice. And this has nothing to do with their true skills. Women with a high pitched voice in particular are often denied this.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had a high pitched voice, only we don’t know it because at the beginning of her political career in the 1970s, she took a voice coach. She learned to speak more slowly and with a deeper, more authoritative voice.

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the blood analysis start-up Theranos, who went to prison for fraud, also stood out because of her rather deep voice. Her natural voice sounded completely different, higher and more feminine.

As she then admitted in an interview with the New York Times, she created this persona with a deep voice in order to be taken seriously in a world dominated by men.

Pilot’s Voice

The bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell, who often devotes himself to obscure topics, has already come across this thing with the pitch of voices several times. One is the way pilots speak. Pilots choose a sonorous, almost indifferent voice, pausing now and then, and using vernacular and colloquial words that, even in the worst air turbulence, give the impression that the pilot has been through much worse.

The surprise here is that apparently Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, is not entirely uninvolved. His way of speaking rubbed off on other pilots and today it seems to be precisely this voice that most pilots adopt. After all, who wants to have a pilot in the cockpit whose voice sounds shrill and conveys stress and fear? Confidence would be lost immediately and panic would break out in the cabin.

US Airways flight 1549 in 2009 is a case in point: after a bird strike immediately after take-off, both engines failed and the captain decided to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River. Captain Chelsey Sullenberger’s sober and often monosyllabic communication with air traffic control is cited as a prime example of this pilot’s voice.

Here is the recording of the conversation between air traffic control and Sullenberger:

Sexy Baby Voice

Whereas Margaret Thatcher and Elizabeth Holmes tried to have a deeper voice, some women choose the exact opposite. They adapt a higher pitched voice, often in the same way as when talking to a baby, but with other distinctive features. Not only does it sound “sexier”, it is also accompanied by certain sounds. By sounds, we mean a snoring, a certain laugh or delays.

This buzzing, which Lake Bell calls “vocal fry”, sounds like this:

In Lake Bell’s movie, a voice coach asks her friend, who uses such a sexy baby voice, if she can carry out a speech experiment with her. She is asked to count from 1 to 10, with the odd ones always being said with the lowest pitch and the even ones with the highest. At the end, she should end with the sentence “That’s my voice” (from 6:56 in the following podcast):

To her friend’s surprise, she finally brings out her true voice, which sounds deeper and yet very feminine.

The problem with the sexy baby voice is that it makes women appear incompetent and unassertive. Their voice is often aimed at a male audience, in front of whom these women appear rather stupid and naive and are seen more as sex objects. This is why this voice is associated more with sex symbols such as Marilyn Monroe or than with leaders and self-confident and assertive women such as Angela Merkel, Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton. At work, the Sexy Baby Voice acts as an obstacle for women. They are passed over for promotions and their opinions are not taken seriously.

What About Me?

After I put aside my fear of listening to my own voice, I realized something else. Not that I put such a “vocal fry” in my voice, or that I have a sexy boy voice (whatever that sounds like), but that I simply speak too fast. Even my blessed grandmother occasionally asked me to speak more slowly so that she could follow me. As someone who does a lot of public speaking, I have to keep reminding myself to take it down a notch and save other vocal tones for moments with friends, family and children.

Which pitch you choose and where you use it naturally depends on the context. But you should be aware of the consequences. A single pitch for all occasions is just as wrong as the wrong pitch for the wrong moment.

When we recorded a series of training videos a few years ago, I had to leave the room every time the editor played the videos.
