A few years ago, the news<\/a> broke that irons from China were logging into WLANs and uploading malware to PCs on the same network. In addition to irons, kettles and webcams were also identified doing the same thing. For many readers, it was at least as surprising that irons (or kettles) were equipped with microchips. Weren’t they just rather unintelligent household appliances that were supposed to warm or heat something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that nowadays almost every household appliance has computer chips. From refrigerators to washing machines, from hair dryers to electric toothbrushes, these appliances run small processors that ensure that the washing program or dental care is carried out safely. A decade ago, this fact still caused astonishment, even though it had long been common practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The built-in chips are now so powerful that Russian soldiers in Ukraine were found with truckloads of looted washing machines, which were particularly attractive because of their built-in chips. The Russian arms industry lacked these thanks to the supply of microchips being cut off by Western economic sanctions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a few years’ time, it will be just as common for the same household appliances to have not only such microchips, but also AI chips (GPUs) with artificial intelligence running on them. But why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking to household appliances will become a matter of course. Just as voice assistants can already provide information on smartphones or in cars today, in future we will be able to talk to our washing machine to operate it. The same AI will not only talk to us, but will also be able to recognize the laundry items and select the appropriate wash cycles thanks to built-in sensors. The iron will be able to recognize the materials and the areas with the most creases and adjust the ironing program accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans will not be the only ones with whom household appliances communicate. They will exchange information with each other as well as with our two-legged and two-handed household helpers. Robot helpers will be informed by the washing machine when it is ready and the iron can already prepare for ironing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of this is no longer a dream of the future, as Humane<\/a>, a start-up from Silicon Valley that launched the AI pin<\/a>, has now presented an operating system for precisely such applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
