That was my reading load over the last three weeks while I was traveling in Europe. I’ve read all of these twenty-plus French comics – I’ve been collecting them specifically for years – and a dozen non-fiction and fiction books. I bought most of them during my stay in Europe, which explains the many French- and German-language books. I brought the English-language books with me to read on the outward flight, and I’ll bring the others with me on my return flight to the USA.

And the books in the picture are only half of the books I carry with me, because I still have a nice stock of unread books and comics. I have to reveal a little secret: I suffer from a phobia of running out of books on the road. A terrible state of affairs!

Und ja, ich lese die Bücher und Comics tatsächlich auf gedrucktem Papier und nehme die Mühe auf mich, mit mehr als 20 Kilogramm extra Gepäck unterwegs zu sein. Bei Comics ist es klar: diese Kunst ist besser gedruckt auf Papier zu genießen. Und ein kleiner Nebenaspekt: ein französischer Comic auf dem iPad kommt schon mal von Apple zensuriert daher. Da fehlt schon gern ein Bild, weil darin ein blanker Busen zu sehen war.

Bei Büchern wiederum habe ich für mich gemerkt, dass ich mir mehr vom Text merke, wenn ich ihn auf Papier lese und nicht digital. Es gibt einige Studien dazu, die das teilweise bestätigen. Bücher für mich sind auch Einrichtungs- und Arbeitsgegenstände. Ich liebe es, meine Bibliothek zu betrachten und von meinen Büchern umgeben zu sein. Es hat etwas Beruhigendes und Inspirierendes.

Just as musicians go to many concerts, painters go to museums and galleries, actors see many films and video game programmers play video games. You learn from your peers and get your inspiration. Je mehr man liest, desto besser und rascher kann man es auch. Die Lesegeschwindigkeit erhöht sich automatisch, man hat eben einfach mehr Übung. Und solch ein Lesepensum beeinflusst auch wie ich Bücher schreibe. Vor allem aus den Sachbüchern erhalte ich Daten und Fakten und viele Anreize.

Nevertheless, I understand that some people are amazed at my consumption of written material, because in addition to the books and comics, there are of course lots of online posts and blogs that I use to keep myself up to date and informed. But how do I manage such a workload?

• If you read a lot, you also become a faster reader;
• I always have a book with me when I’m out and about and read at every opportunity;
• I take the train or public transportation instead of renting a car, which allows me to read;
• I avoid watching pointless Tik Tok or Instagram videos and wasting time on them;
• I don’t watch TV (unless there’s a soccer championship);
